The purpose of the CCC. is to unite the Cuban community of
San Antonio, to maintain alive its customs and traditions and to cooperate with the community at large Through the years, we have developed ties with many cultural, social and educational entities from many ethnic backgrounds.Â
For many years, since the early 1980’s, and especially after 1994, the Cuban Cultural Center has worked diligently assisting newly-arrived Cubans to the San Antonio area.Â
The CCC initially provides them with lodging, supplying them with such items as beds, clothes, kitchen utensils, and basic furnishings and food.Â
The CCC assists them with job contacts trying to keep these new refugees from becoming accustomed to the welfare system. Lately, the CCC has worked closely with Catholic Charities in these efforts and has also contributed funds for some Bosnian and African refugees that have come to our city.Â
The CCC also helps Cubans in the area who are in need of basic necessities. When someone has lost a job, or there is a death in the family and the family doesn’t have the means for funeral expenses, the CCC comes forward to lend a helping hand on a one-time basis.Â
Educationally, the CCC for many years has awarded 3 or 4 scholarships annually to local college students. Three of these are offered to students from the community at large and one is awarded to a Cuban American student. Each of these scholarships is for $1,500.00
Culturally, the CCC has provided ample opportunities to the Cuban community and to the community at large to participate in Cuban tradition- oriented events. The CCC has sponsored concerts with Cuban artists, theatrical plays, and others, the Comparsa program being one of the most important because it engages a large number of young people working together with their families.Â
It is important to note that this program is not only available to Cuban Americans, but to their friends from other ethnic groups. It is a way of having other cultures become part of ours.
The Cuban Cultural Center (Centro Cultural Cubano) of San Antonio is a non-profit organization founded in 1976. Its objective is to unite the cuban community in San Antonio, to preserve cuban traditions and customs, and to promulgate the struggle for a free and democratic Cuba. By organizing family oriented fund raising events, strictly with the cooperation of our volunteers, the Center promotes education and assists those in need.Â
The Cuban Cultural Center assists and supports the cuban american community in this city, as well as, the community at large regardless of race, gender, political and/or religious affiliation. If you would like to join our volunteers, please send an email to:Â volunteers@cubancc.org
